What is a Pulled Wool Saddle Pad?  The name is derived from a series of hand pulled loops of wool roving to form a pad intended to go between the horses back and the saddle.  It creates both a cushion and protection for both the horse and underneath side of saddle and is a main component to every riders' tack collection.  Pulled Wool Saddle Pads, the ultimate in western wool saddle pads, are made from 100% virgin wool and enhances the “horse to human experience!”  Visit benefits of wool saddle pads for details why wool makes premium saddle pads.

What size and weight are these Pads, and how to they feel?  Custom sizes are available; the most popular is 32” X 32”.  New, these pads are approximately 1” thick and weigh just about 7 lbs.  With initial use these pads quickly compress to about half the original thickness to about  5/8 - 3/4" and enhances a “feely-contact” or the ability to feel muscle/structural movement of the horse pending saddle quality.  Each pad undergoes a mild felting process, become “supple” or “raggy” with initial use, and takes on the contour of the horses' back.  Little known facts about longevity and historical information can be found on  Diane Myers Pad Maker and History.

Why a wool saddle pad?  Known for its thermoregulation, wicking properties and antimicrobial/antibacterial qualities wool is considered the "new high-tech fiber unmatched!"  Huh?  The old-timers in the tack world have used wool for years with a proven track record!  (Did you know baby diapers use to be made of wool for this very reason and before rubber pants were invented...and long before disposables!).  Its insulation factor aids to circulation in either cold or hot climates.  Wool absorbs up to 30% of its dry weight before ever feeling wet to outperform other natural and synthetic fibers, and it wards off pesky fungal issues.  It also deters dirt and debris whereas cotton and synthetics attracts dirt.  Longevity – these pads can last years with proper care.   The list is endless for natural therapeutic benefits to Wool Saddle Pads.

How do I justify spending this much money on a saddle pad? Everything about your horses' health is an investment. Purchase, feeding, maintenance, tack  for our equine athletes come at a price.  This site refers to tack as an "investment" with a Pulled Wool Saddle Pad considered a pivotal addition to equipment used in a day to day program.  A saddle pad that is a protective shield of cushion and comfort, known for longevity for life of the pad, minimal maintenance (just like every other piece of tack I might add)…so I ask:  How can buying a custom Pulled Wool Saddle Pad not be a solid investment?

Would a Pulled Wool Saddle Pad be a choice as a correctional pad, suitable as a High Withered Saddle Pad, or even Contour Saddle Pad?   Ultimately, I believe so.  But, the final decision is up to you to factor the needs of your horse, and consulting your veterinarian is always a good idea!   Also, the fit of the saddle is a major factor.  No Saddle Pad can compensate for an ill-fitting saddle.  Here is a link to more information on using a Pulled Wool Saddle Pad as a correctional pad.

How do I clean these Pads?  Super easy and strictly up to personal preference!  Never use a power washer though!  Pick one of the following methods:  1)  Hose off debris with garden hose and allow to air dry.  2) Shop Vac. after use.  3) Flip and rotate.  And 3) the favorite of many:  Don’t ever,  EVER Wash!  Bottom line:  every piece of tack is an investment and requires care and maintenance.  Click link for best approaches on cleaning and care including proper storate.

Can Pads be personalized?  Yes!  Most all orders are custom and working with clients to create a lasting pad is always rewarding.  Colors (natural wool fibers are perfect in every application), dyed wool is typically from Merino, basic shapes can be worked into the design, and (my favorite) brands that are “felted” onto the finished pad.   Felting brands is a process that drives a contract color of wool into the pad itself using wicked specialied needles.  Check out some examples of brands felted onto pads.

Who uses these Pads?   Anyone!  Horsemen and Horsewomen of all disciplines!  Especially those wanting to enhance their "horse to rider" experience!  These pads are loved by both horses and humans!

I've not heard a lot about Pulled Wool Saddle Pads.  What is the background and history about these Pads?   Labor intense, and access to manufacturing products keep professional pad makers in short supply.  These types of pads have a century of history especially in the Western United States and with the Great Basin Buckaroo.
A close view of individuals loops "pulled" that makes up a pad.  Average loops for a 32" square pad is 3,600 loops!
Prices vary pending size, and with or without brands.  Below are examples of pads reflecting pricing at the time built.  2023 reflects  price increases.  Shipping is additional.  Typical shipping costs run as much as $50 within the Continental US.
►Production price without brands:  .45 per square inch (width x length) base price
►Production price with brands:   .50 per square inch (width x length) base price

►Shipping varies
►When measuring for pads:  It's ideal to have pad exposed from underneath all sides of saddle skirts by an inch or two.  Measuring the underside of saddle (length and drop from side to side) is helpful.
